Overcoming Dangers and Strengthening Bonds
On March 25th, 2001, I never felt closer to great danger and loss. It was
terrible from the start. In the morning, from the lift my cousin Sunny
and I were riding on,
we saw two
paramedics carrying away somebody wrapped in vinyl loth, obviously injured.Although I was quite shaken from seeing that sight, during the morning
ski, I kept trying to compete with Sunny down the slope, and as a result,
I tripped several times. In the afternoon, we decided to go down
from the mountaintop, which was supposed to be fine since we had tried
it the day before. Halfway down the mountain, my father and I waited
for my mother and Sunny, but they didn’t come down. Terrible images
flashed through my mind, and I felt guilty for not always having been nice
to my mother and for having been competitive with Sunny that morning.
About thirty minutes later, my father suspected that my mother and my sister
had gone down the advanced course by mistake, but I insisted we wait a
bit longer. Just then, I spotted a figure that looked vaguely like
Sunny way up the slope. My father climbed up about a hundred meters
to reach that person. It was Sunny, and she told my father that my
mother had kept falling over and over again, and had become so scared that
she couldn’t move. Later, we found out my mother’s ski boots had
been loose. My mother was able to ski after her boots were fixed,
but tragedy occurred once more, when Sunny and I were going down the last
part of the mountain and Sunny nearly fell off a cliff, about two meters
high. I was too horrified to move or even scream. Thankfully,
the red safety ropes saved her. After these close calls, I realized
how precious my family was to me, and was overwhelmed by emotions of relief,
fear and gratitude toward God for keeping us safe. Also, I felt much
closer to my family than before the trip, because of the hardship we went
through together. I learned that I must be more aware of the dangers
in living and never forget to treasure the family bond, for it would help
us in times of trouble.
